Cybersecurity Statistics

Internationally, cybersecurity is a growing concern, and hackers are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their tactics to breach cybersecurity.

Without premium security software, devices, programs / apps and user data are at risk.

%

Almost all malicious software is delivered via e-mail.

s

Every minute, about three people are victims to cybercrime.

b

Internationally, over 2 billion records are leaked per year.

%

A third of people are very likely to open phishing e-mails.

$,m

Cybercrime costs organisations millions, per minute.

%

Almost all of data breaches are financially motivated.

%

Ransomware attacks increased drastically from 2019 to 2020.

%

Most security breaches are caused by outsiders to the company.

$m

The worth of the cybersecurity market in 2020 exceeded all expectations.

%

Malicious software (malware) attacks increased tremendously from 2019 to 2020.

b

Billions of credentials from 100 000 data breaches are available on the dark web.

On average, it takes 280 days to find and contain a cyberattack on a business.

It is estimated that businesses spent $170 billion on cybersecurity in 2022, and the global cybersecurity market will be valued at $403 billion by 2027 – with a compound annual growth rate of 12.5%.

Yet, hackers still manage to compromise corporate data and systems with relative ease, on a regular basis. This is due to a general lack in cybersecurity awareness and poor practices by most companies – and very little thereof by private individuals.

The covid pandemic and continued remote workforce post-covid had a major impact on cybersecurity. According to international law firm, Reed Smith, online scams spiked by more than 400% in March 2020 compared to previous months. Google revealed that it blocking more than 18 million malware and phishing e-mails related to covid, every day.

Cybersecurity statistics are important in highlighting the risks we face, and cybersecurity insights are vital to communicate common security mistakes, such as leaving data unprotected and using weak passwords, which cause vulnerability to breaches.

It is crucial for private individuals to have device and software protection installed, and for businesses to implement training processes that build awareness, prevention and best practices into their corporate culture – as companies may also be liable for the damage caused by the loss or theft of third-party data.

Major Hacking Events & Data Breaches

Organisations suffer costly losses of data due to hacking – including financial records, customer details, and operational records and data.

  • Sony’s PlayStation Network was hacked in 2011 and data of 77 million users were exposed, while the service was down for 23 days – costing Sony over $171 million.

  • Equifax compromised 143 million consumers in 2017, at a cost of $4 billion to the company, plus received a fine of $425 million by the Federal Trade Commission when found liable for the breach.

  • FriendFinder had a breach of data of 412 million users in 2016.

  • Marriott-Starwood hotel firm compromised information belonging to more than 500 million customers.

  • Under Armor’s MyFitnessPal app’s hack affected 150 million users in 2018.

  • Yahoo! lost the data from more than 3 billion customer accounts in 2013.

  • The WannaCry ransomware attack virus caused one of the most damaging attacks in history. It appeared in 2017, infected more than 230 000 devices across 150 countries – causing damages of at least $4 billion.
